How to Order

Unfortunately, ordering custom made and made to measure furniture is not as simple as the "1-Click" shopping available on certain sites. We endeavored to provide information here to make the process as smooth as possible. As always, if you have any questions, contact us, e-mail us at sales@1x1modern.com, or call us at (949) 392-6279.

STEP 1: Get Prepared

We measure using the Metric System of centimeters. When we got around to making this website, we found out that you cannot input fractions of an inch in this e-commerce platform that we are using. We could have limited the inputs to inches, but we didn't think that is the level of precision you want here for your custom made furniture. 1 inch is more than 2.5 cm – just not precise enough. Because 1 cm is equal to 0.39 inch, that gets you much closer to a more precisely sized custom made furniture that you want and need.

Metric and Imperial Tape Measure

Please use a metric/imperial tape measure (which you can easily buy here), or a unit converter app on your smartphone (iOS and Android), so that you can give us the dimensions you want in centimeters. After all, the rest of the world is using the metric system, and we hope that you won't mind too.

STEP 2: Size Your Furniture

Decide where you want the furniture and give us the size dimensions. Most furniture is a rectangular box, usually pushed up against a wall. Bearing that in mind, we have adopted the following convention to talk about its dimensions:

Legend for Width Height Depth Dimensions

  • Width: When you stand in front of the furniture with wall behind it, Width is the dimension of how wide the furniture is. This dimension is often called "Length", but we decided to use Width.
  • Depth: Again, standing in front of the furniture with wall behind it, Depth is how deep the furniture is from the wall. Because there might be baseboards along the wall, Depth is not the actual distance touching the wall, but more the footprint of the furniture hitting the baseboards.
  • Height: Height is how high the furniture is measured from the floor.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are planning to push the furniture right against the wall, think of the baseboards and floorboards that might get in the way. Some of our furniture designs have a cutout around their base to clear over baseboards, but most do not.

Measure to Baseboards

STEP 3: Consider Other Configuration Options

Most of our designs ask for other configuration options, such as the height of legs, or number of drawers and so on. Consider your needs and decide on what configuration options you want.

Configuration Options Depending on Furniture Design

Product configuration options

As shown on the example above, depending on the furniture design, you might be asked to:

  • Choose the height of the steel legs or some other internal dimension inside the main Width, Depth and Height
  • Choose the number of drawer columns in which drawers will be distributed
  • Choose the total number of drawers (obviously, the total number of drawers has to be divisible by the number of drawer columns you chose; that is, it will be difficult for us to fit 9 drawers in 2 columns, but we will be able to fit 9 drawers in 3 columns)
  • Choose whether some walls will have certain features, such as indenting

STEP 4: Choose Your Finishes

You can specify whether you want wood veneer or color lacquer on most of our furniture designs. Consider whether you want your custom-made furniture to blend in or stand out from other pieces in your room, and decide accordingly.

After you choose wood veneer or color lacquer, you will also be able to choose the level of glossiness for the protective polyurethane coating. We offer two levels of coating glossiness: Satin and Glossy

Glossy Coating on Color Lacquer
Glossy coating on color lacquer
  • Satin coating is not very reflective (more like a dull, indistinct shine) on both wood veneer or color lacquer, and is generally a good choice for most household furniture and would complement well the other furniture you have.
  • Glossy coating is very reflective (like very shiny nail polish), and that is good for accent piece or special pieces that you might want to make stand out. Glossy coating on a big piece of furniture can look a little overwhelming, however.

Depending on the furniture design you choose, there might be steel legs or frames in the furniture, in which case, we offer two types of steel finishes ... click here for more info.

  • Nickel Satin Brushed Steel Finish is not very reflective (more like a dull, indistinct shine), created by brushing the steel surface with a grit brush. The Nickel Satin Brushed Steel finish is generally a good choice for most household furniture and would complement well the other furniture you have.
  • Chrome Polished Steel Finish is very reflective (like very shiny nail polish), created by chrome plating the steel and then polishing it. This is good for accent piece or special pieces that you might want to make stand out.

For some furniture with slender legs (for example, our Initially Side Table), we can only make those types of slender legs with Chrome Polished Steel, so we don't offer you a choice there. In cases where there is a choice for the steel finish, we will also match the other hardware (for example, drawer pulls and handles) to match your choice.
